The Jetson future? No. The Idiocracy future? We are working towards it. The Orwellian future? Yes. Doublethink went from the horror of the book "1984" to something that is used everyday. All you have to do is look at the news to see the Cult of Personality. I used to be worried about Nuclear War as the end the U.S. as we know it. Now I think it will be the slow death described by Orwell's ideas.
I have a friend a few years older than me who posts about once a year on Facebook that he still holds out hope that the future will deliver him a flying car. I don't think he'll see one in our lifetimes. OTOH, I would perfectly satisfied with one that drives itself.
It's cool how we can all use this forum to communicate instantly across the globe about how underwhelming the future is.
You have no idea how 1980's it really is, do you? I was doing the same (different topics) starting in 1984 with Usenet. Replies took a little longer, mostly due to the fewer number of participants.
By 1990 I was freaking my mom out by leaving her text messages on her computer (me in Montana at college, her in Wyoming in her college office), had "penpals" all over the globe and real-time chat via telnet services anytime I liked. Video chat was a thing by the mid 90's. Oohhh, so modern and futuristic here in 2018, 20 and 30 years later.
I was born during the Korean War.
Advances since then:
Color TV
safety advances in cars - Thank you Ralph Nader
further advances in automotive safety that actually work - Japan, Germany
advances in component miniaturization - Intel, AMD and others.
GPS - NASA.
Internet - Phone companies and Al Gore
victory of lobbyists over the American people - Supreme Court and Citizens United.
When I was in the fourth grade in 1957, I was distinctly promised "flying cars" by the year 2000. I'm still waiting.
My son hoped for that. I replied people can't drive in two dimensions, you want to give them three.
