My husband and I are from the Seattle area. We grew up in Kent. However, we've been living in Salem, Massachusetts for the last 3 years and we've fallen in love with it. It has this neat old charm and there's really cute restaurants and shops that we can walk to. We have our favorite breakfast place and we go to the pub every Friday night. We can even walk to the beach. It's adorable. We have a 6 year old son, and a new baby on the way. Our family is all in the Seattle area so we're thinking about moving back. I really want to move back to an area that's a little more like Salem. Kent isn't really a walking city, ya know? I want more of a Capital Hill feel but it's expensive and I don't think it's very family-friendly. I was thinking about maybe Ballard, or even Edmonds. West Seattle came to mind too. I mean, I'd love to live at Alki but that's even more expensive. Any suggestions? Thank you!

Edmonds would be a good choice, also Port Townsend, Port Ludlow, Poulsbo.
There really isn't anything close to being as old as on the east coast but these are affordable small towns with shops and restaurants withing walking distance if you live close to town.

Yes, Washington really doesn't have anything as cool as Salem. I love Edmonds, but Edmonds got the nickname "Deadmonds" for a reason, LOL... it's a bit too quiet. Ballard is now pretty trendy and building out, losing its Norse identity.

Does it have to be in the Seattle region? Tacoma, Poulsbo, Bellingham and even Olympia got quite some charms.
