We are looking at relocating to Seattle but I am concerned with the number of overcast days...we used to live in Portland, OR and found it depressing. There was a hot spring about 2 hours drive from Portland that was always warm and usually sunny for those times when we just needed a sunbreak. Is there such a place (sunny, not necessarily warm) near Seattle?

Why would you move to Seattle if you found Portland depressing? Hawaii is big with Seattle but closer would be Eastern Washington, SoCal and Florida for vacations. If you didn't like the weather in Portland, you will not likely like the weather in Seattle.

All you need to do is go east of the Cascades. Lake Chelan is a popular getaway for long weekends, as are the San Juan Islands (but more in the summer). But if you found the weather in Portland depressing and wouldn't want to live there again for that reason, you won't like Seattle either. Them's the breaks.

As Seacove said, Hawaii is very popular for Seattleites' vacations. Lots of direct flights between Seattle and all of the islands.

Both Whidbey island and Sequim are in the rain shadow of the Olympics and get sun almost every day, but often only for an hour or two in the afternoon. They get a lot less rain, as little as 10" a year compared to 40 in the rest of the Puget Sound area. Probably not worth 3 hours drive/ferry for a little more sun. Thinking about my vacations in the last few years, it's been the Methow Valley in Central WA, Las Vegas, Lake Tahoe, the Bay Area and Southern CA. Even a weekend in a sunny spot can help a lot, though I'm not really bothered by the 9-10 months of rain and clouds. Small price to pay for everything being green.

When I first moved to Wenatchee in 1985 I had a business meeting in Cle Elum on a Friday afternoon. As I drove I-90 I noticed the heavy traffic flowing east...so much so I turned on the radio to see why Seattle was being evacuated!! Rain in Seattle, sun in eastern Washington was the reason for the evacuation.

Half the homes in Okanogan County are owned by people who live in western Washington. The percentage for Chelan County is 30-40%. Not sure the number for Kittitas County. I have a friend that lives in the city center of Wenatchee....his new neighbors are from western Washington. So a second home in a city with sun!!!

We have a vacation home we rent. Folks just come on over and sit in the sunshine and stare at the mountains. Nice folks, paid for the mortgage.
