Others have suggested locations north of Seattle, but don't cross out the other directions. Even if it is away from the Burke/Gilman trail.

You can check out Beacon Hill/Columbia City which has the Light rail, and are generally affordable. Both are close to Seward Park (very awesome), close to Lk. Washington Blvd and close to the Mtn to Sound trail.

The maple leaf / northgate area has easy access to downtown, you can return as late as ~12:15am and is one bus. Also easy access to UW (67 or 68, I forget which one).

I rented a room in Ravenna for a summer and it was a good location for public transit (I didn't have a car). Most of the buses go past UW on their way to/from Ravenna. Check it out!

As another person has said, from Everett, you would be taking the Sounder Commuter Train. When it is in service, it is a great, but the Everett to Seattle line is notorious for being shut-down because of mudslides. If there is a mudslide on Monday, the line remains closed for another 48 hours for safety. There were times during the winter when I think the train did not run for a full week. Surprisingly, many people from this area may not know it, but apparently national news reports on these mudslides and the shut-down of the commuter trains.
