Despite having lived in the Greater Seattle area for 3 years, I have been lazy at finding and saving my favorite radio stations, especially AM ones. Recently I heard a great 1 hr program covering start-up companies.

Anyone have any recommendations on talk shows and other non-music programs and stations? I assume most are on AM rather than FM?

My radio stays on KUOW, (NPR, BBC and local news and talk), for most of the day.

Most are on AM, but 97.3 FM also has some. I only listen Saturdays to Master Gardener Ciscoe Morris 10-noon but they have a full lineup of talk shows.

I also may listen early Saturday morning 6-10 to the car repair and home improvement shows on KVI 570AM. They also have a full weekly lineup of talk shows, mostly political during the week.

In the car when not listening to music I listen to either 950 KJR Sports Radio or 710 ESPN

Depends what you call "great".

I listen to three AM stations. Oh, wait: one is off the air.

1) Right-wing (KTTH)
2) Left-wing (formerly AM 1090)
3) All-news (KOMO)

I was sorry to see the left-wing station go (changed format to "all sports"), presumably due to poor ratings, since my views are mostly the other direction. Good to hear why others believe as they do, and add balance to my opinions.

KTTH has a variety of programs in non-peak hours related to finance, aging, and other topics. Some are paid programming and thus suspect. As for the specific pundits, programs change every year or so, thus I don't grow too attached to any particular program or individual.

I gather radio is a tough business these days and I personally wouldn't be too surprised if Internet-based radio continued to erode the market share.

KIRO? Their old weekday line-up was a lefty in morning, righty in afternoon, stupid during drive time, and bats--t crazy at night. I believe they moved all of this to their FM channel.

No, 1090 AM. Now it's all sports. Was liberal radio, and before that it was KING AM, which was good local talk radio back in the day.

Wow, news to me. Seems that sports radio is already crowded in this market with KJR and KIRO. 1090 just seemed way too firebrand and hate-filled for Seattle's latte sipping NPR lefties.

Bet you nailed it, with that latter statement. The more "flamboyant" KTTH pundits, on the Right, seem to be gone now too (Savage, Glenn Beck), though as-mentioned formats change every year or so. Nothing is forever on radio, they flow with current economic currents.

Yeah, I tuned into 1090 for a balance too. Thom Hartman was okay, Norman Goldman was good for some laughs but I couldn't take Ed Shultz' or Stephanie Miller's ranting. And Miller spent way too much trying to make fun of what the conservative talk hosts said the day before, and the loud laughing with her snarky co-host over lame sarcastic attempts at humor was annoying.

Hard to believe the only progressive station in Seattle got axed for a fourth area sports station, others being 710, 950 and 1380 in Everett. I guess CBS wants more clout for national TV sports contracts. They also axed progressive stations in Portland and Spokane for sports.

One of my favorite national talk hosts is Hugh Hewitt on 1590 at 3pm with informative and intelligent discussions with knowledgable guests. Michael Medved on 770 is okay. Btw - Glenn Beck and Michael Savage are still around (on 570).

1300 Bloomberg is good for financial talk and advice.

Locally I like John Carlson on 570 mornings. 570's classic rock experiment didn't last long. When they're not talking about human interest stuff like crimes and what-would-you-do's, Luke Burbank, Dave Ross and Dori Monson are okay on 97.3. Ron And Don and the woman? Too noisey.

I also listen to 1000 for news and 950 and 710 for sports. Brock Huard mornings on 710 is one of the best around.
