I grew up near Cottage lake. Now you practically have to be a millionaire to live there. Is makes me sad to see what's happened to Western Wa.

I live in Woodinville in Hollywood Hill next to Cottage Lake.

There is a mix of older folks and younger families. It's nice and quiet around here.

I don't really have a problem with septic tanks. Sure you have to call someone to inspect them and pump them out every few years but I'm guessing you also save from having to pay for city sewage.

As others have said, you can't really go wrong around here. The schools are good, there's a lot of shopping if you need something (Target, Costco, restaurants, etc.), and it's not far from Bellevue, Kirkland, Bothell, and Seattle.

Which communities in Woodinville are considered the young, family friendly ones? We are considering a move from SoCal and are looking for a place with a strong sense of community for our 3 kids. Thanks!

Can you swim in Cottage lake? If not, what are other nearby swimming lakes?

You can, but when you consider that the park formerly known as Norm's Resort put in an open air swimming pool right next to the lake, it probably wasn't because the lake was great for swimming.

It's now public - Cottage Lake Park and the pool is run by the Northshore YMCA, so the park is free but the Y probably charges the standard day pass fee for the pool.

I live in "The Farm" and it is a great community for families with kids. There is a space that you can rent out called "The Barn" for birthday parties and other gatherings. Halloween is really cool around here so most families from the area come here to go trick or treating, etc.

I am also from SoCal and I would say that this area is sort of like Rancho Palos Verdes / Rolling Hills in that you see some horses around and the houses are generally large homes with large lots.

RVD.

Just out of curiosity.. how expensive are rentals in these area's? Are there plenty of apartments or town homes for rent? What is the average price for a 2 bed unit going for?

There's not a ton of apartments in Woodinville though there are some in the plans. Here's a couple:
