This is no longer true.

Washington was among the fastest-growing states. Here’s why that’s no longer the case

Most of this thread is from 7 plus years ago. Yes, covid has changed a few things, but even before the pandemic Seattle’s growth was slowing. Affordability plus the huge homeless population became a slower growth mechanism. The city, well known for booms and busts must accept they are in the bust cycle. That said, the economy is different in 2022 and it will be much quicker to get back on track.

The real estate market in the Seattle area would beg to differ on this bust cycle we are in. If this is a bust, I shudder to think what a new boom would look like for the housing market.

Perhaps bust was the wrong word. Slowing maybe better. In 2020 the growth rate slowed. Perhaps pandemic related. And I am referring to just the city, not the metro area which continues to explode. And I agree future growth will likely be strong both in city and suburbs. Fully expect metro will be in top 10 within a decade.

Was a very interesting read. Makes me wonder if it's a temporary blip, or a sign of change on the horizon?

Obviously COVID has been a factor, but increasing crime and COL/affordability have also been turning into serious problems here.

Work from home may also be here to stay for many tech professionals, and those not dead set on living here may choose cheaper locales to stretch their income further.

I suspect that the small change in overall population in the article is due to a mix of both some work-from-home folks choosing to leave if they have the option, and also people of more modest means choosing to flee the area due to COL, crime, and other issues. Notice how many of the states that saw more growth tend to be cheaper places to live (for now at least).

So many ways to look at it. I saw this as well:

"Seattle and Tacoma were among the 50 most competitive rental markets in the US in 2021"
