Hi all, I am moving to Redmond area from Bay Area, CA as I have been offered a good job there. I have read horror stories about the area on how depressing it is there. My job gives me the flexibility to work remotely couple of days from home. So, we will be OK with living a little away, if the area gets more sun than proper Redmond. Are there any places like that? I heard North Bend area gets a little more sunny days than Redmond. Is that true? Are there any other places like that?

No, that is not true about North Bend. In fact, the closer you squeeze in towards the Cascade Mountains, coming from the west, the more rain you're going to get. North Bend gets nearly twice as much precipitation as Seattle proper.

Western Washington weather pretty much is what it is, everywhere. You will get slightly less rain in Seattle than you will in Redmond (negligible, in my opinion, but still less). Unless you're willing to commute from the Olympic rain shadow on the peninsula (Sequim, Port Townsend...) or from the east side of the Cascades (Ellensburg, Yakima, Wenatchee, Roslyn...), then you're stuck with the conventional "Seattle weather." If it still makes sense for you to have a hefty commute, then I would recommend looking into those locations. Good luck!

Sequim and Port Townsend, in the rain shadow of the Olympics.

Not within a distance that would make for even a terrible commute. The nearest (Ruth's post)would involve a ferry ride
and close to two hours driving time. Where I work people commute from those areas, but we are walking distance from the Bainbridge ferry. Working in Seattle, I can tell you that Seattle gets more sun than the eastside, but not enough to notice unless you are paying close attention.

As long as you live west of the Cascades - no. At least not enough to make it worth driving even 10 more minutes. You can get gloomier and rainier, but not really sunnier. The further east of the Cascades you get, the more sun you'll find. Even if a place is in the rain shadow, you'll still get lots of grey.

If you know you need sun, you may want to seriously think hard about moving here. It really, really gets to some people.

I totally agree with this sentiment ... if you classify stories about gray skies using the word "horror" - this may not be the place for you. Others of us cherish the gray wintery skies with the accompanying mild temperatures - we can go outside year round and be active.

I don't think much different. You've got to be on the other side of the Cascades to maybe Cle Elum to see a difference in the amount of sunshine....which is not feasible for commuting.

As others have intimated, you would need to at least flip that "couple of days from home" to a couple days at work and the rest from home. Sounds like that is not exactly what your employer has in mind, however.

While going far enough west or east might get you less rain (Sequim) or more sun (Ellensburg), respectively, going south won't help you any, in that Olympia, Portland, and Eugene all get considerable more rain than Seattle.

Rest assured, however, that Seattle's summers are actually better than foggy San Francisco's.
