Early in the film, the couple who own a bed & breakfast try to convince him of the "strange occurrences" in their B&B. This couple looks on eagerly, hoping the author is convinced, hoping he'll put them in his next book and thus attract business for their B&B.
The author has become a cynic. Naturally, by the end of the film, he finds a real ghost.
