Passed by today and saw a huge “Now Hiring” sign at Sears, but then also a land use sign talking about a multi-use zoning, with hundreds of apartments there. What is going on? Hiring to help with a going out of business sale? Has that project been approved yet?

Here's a list of announced closures: Sears is closing 103 stores - Business Insider

I don't know that area as well as you, but it does mention one on Aurora.

It’s not on the list, which makes it even more confusing. Maybe they are not being closed for poor performance, but are not going to have their lease renewed if the project is approved.

I've been hearing that Sears is supposed to close for a while, and signs made me think it was going to close. So I was confused by the hiring signs, as well. I don't know what the story is, but I'm just as confused as you are. Hopefully someone else knows.

Perhaps just a proposed development project for now at the Redmond location?

The list does mention the Shoreline and Federal Way stores as locations to be closed.

Things definitely aren't looking good for Sears...

The area will be redeveloped, Sears will have to go sooner or later.

Was just thinking to myself, I don't believe I've been in a Sears store in about 20 years.

Don't go, impossible to find a register with a cashier, they don't want your business.

The property just off 520 is more valuable than a Sears store. I would like to see a residential/commercial neighborhood, but likely it will become another upscale strip mall with Trader Joe's, and other trendy stores.

There's already a TJ on Ne 24th.. I'm pretty sure it will be a mixed development with residential units, it's too close to the upcoming light-rail station to not do that.
