West Seattle / Alkie Beach

There's lots of eateries and breweries/bars on California Ave.

Yes, California Ave is sort of like a small town's downtown... in a big city.

I think Ballard would be more fun for someone in their 20s, West Seattle for someone in their 30s. Both have a lot to do, just different ways of vibing.

I lived in Ballared after going to school in Queen Anne and my husband's family have lived in Seattle for a little over 60 years so we have a bit of experience living in both during our early-mid 20s.

In my opinion Ballard has a bit more geared towards the younger crowd and the area has more going on late at night and during the weekends that young singles or couples could find interest in. You do have a bit more noise from the hospital and I would consider it more upbeat then neighborly. When we lived in the neighborhood there was an increased amount of homeless folks in the parks and around the hospital area, but I would walk from work at night alone and never had any issues.

West Seattle is nice, you have plenty to do and I find it a bit more remote from the rest of the city so you get less random traffic. So if you're looking for a place to escape from the rush of the city and work it's pretty great and has a more professional edge. The beach is amazing to have during the summer and the there is alway something new popping up around the area. The main issue I have is it can feel too removed and the separation from the rest of the city doesn't allow you perfect fluidity from your home neighborhood to another (for instance Ballard is next to Fremont and a quick bus ride to UW and Wallingford which are young adult hotspots) so events and invites on the other side of town can be daunting at times.

Don't go by me, Im newly transplanted from the east coast and am 50 years old. Like someone said above, California Ave has a small town feel to it which I kinda like being its actually part of a major city. Alki beach has real sand and is not rocky. There's always volleyball games going on, people walking, riding bikes, skateboarding, and there's Kayak rentals and paddle board rentals as well. While parking is an issue on the weekends and summer time, its still not as bad as other cities I have been to.

Not sure if you ever been to NYC, but Ballard and Fremont is to Seattle what Queens is to NYC....

But it feels & sounds like that's where the party is. Either way you won't lose. Seattle proves to be an awesome city with second to none scenic views.

I think you'll have more options in Ballard mainly because it's a real hub of activity and there are just more restaurants. Increasingly, the restaurants in Ballard (because it costs a lot to lease space) are gravitating toward trendy, fusion, expensive cocktails. Some of my faves, I put a few from Phinney Ridge and Fremont, as they are quite close to Ballard.
