“It was just a little weekend party, 30 or so friends gathered in a house above Lake Union in Seattle’s Eastlake neighborhood. This was Feb. 22, before coronavirus dominated every waking minute of life in Washington. When Mondays meant returning to the office, and weekends were a respite. Back then, an evening with friends didn’t seem like a threat to public health: The worst anyone expected was a hangover.
But this party had a sulking wallflower lingering invisible somewhere on the periphery, waiting to be swept in to ruin the fun. Coronavirus arrived unannounced and then ghosted, making it a night no one present would soon forget.

None of the friends gathered for the house party remembered anyone being sick that evening, host Elizabeth Schneider said. Three days later, she and a dozen or so of her friends struggled to get out of bed.
Symptoms began when she awoke on Feb. 25. She didn’t feel great, but she left for work anyway, figuring she’d overdone it on Saturday. Her condition worsened as the day wore on, and she left for home after lunch to recuperate. That night, her fever spiked to 103 degrees.

Late Feb but still an awful idea in the Seattle area, then.

I hope lots of people read this article.

Now, I think people are more aware, but every single person who can practice this temporary distancing and social isolatin at home can help us get back to normal and most importantly, save lives.

From the article:
Quote:
The Seattle Flu Study, a Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation research effort aimed at tracing the seasonal flu, agreed to test them. On March 7 — two weeks after she had been exposed — Schneider got a call notifying her that she, like at least seven others at the party, had tested positive for COVID-19. Not long afterward, Flu Study researchers were directed by the federal government to stop offering tests like the one Schneider received.
Quote:
Here in Washington, where a lack of preparation and hurdles erected by the federal government delayed testing,
I wonder how the federal gov't can order around private entities, like the Gates Foundation. I wonder what the source of the Flu Study's C-virus test kits were. Isn't the UW now cranking out test kits? If the Gates Fdn had its own local source for test kits, that wasn't interfering with the federal supply, what business is it of the fed government, what tests a Gates Fdn project is offering?

I'm also wondering about the age and health status of the cluster of positive cases discussed in the article. The party hostess looks to be roughly 40-ish. Dunno about the guests.
