Coming from farm families, I know that gleaning is, with owner's permission, taking the remains of whatever is left after harvest. Before she died, my co-worker invited me to glean in her pear orchard, after they had been harvested & sold. She showed me which trees I could pick from. What remained wasn't picture-perfect, might be bruised or have a worm hole, but still good.

I have not heard the term gleaning related to using food banks.

It is more or an activity term and can be applied to any activity where a person uses their smarts and knowledge to take/remove what remains or what may not be evident to most.

I gleaned from his lecture his meaning.

I gleaned the fat of the marrow bone.

I gleaned the essence of the hardwood.
