Seattle's transit system is evolving, and will get better in the next decade. Technically, there is no subway, however there are major underground transit stations downtown, originally built in the late 80's for busses, that now serve light rail.

I am a big mass-transit supporter and lived in Boston, Chicago and Portland and know good transit when I see it...sad to admit but I just couldn't make public transit work for me in Seattle/Bellevue so I just bought a car. Trains here aren't like trains back east...there is only light rail and it runs through south-end hood to the airport. Commuter rail here lacks and isn't very expansive. City has a tunnel...so I guess that's cool but there is no pretzel/pizza/coffee/bagel stands in the tunnel stations. I love Seattle more than most people I know but the transit here is kinda lacking...could be worse though.

Do they still call that ugly green bus the waterfront trolley?

Officially, I think it' called the " Waterfront Streetcar" bus, on the premise that it's temporarily replacing the real waterfront streetcar, which still sits in a warehouse south of the International District and is very unlikely to return.
Besides, they can't call it " That Ugly Green Bus".

No, Seattle once had a waterfront streetcar/trolley that ran on tracks from what is now the Sculpture Garden to pioneer square. It closed down several years ago.

Ive never understood this either. Wouldnt they make a killing down there? Or right inside the tunnel entrances?

I dunno, but I'm sure people would make an even bigger mess down there than they do now. My wish list, besides better security (I am just appalled at the recent incident at Westlake) would be cell phone repeaters. My AT&T phone doesn't have reception in the tunnel, and so I can't call my wife to give her an update on when to pick me up at the Park & Ride.

The one on tracks "temporarily" closed down on November 18, 2005. The bus replicating the route was painted the same colors and called " the Waterfront Streetcar" bus, as if painting an ugly bus would convince people that it was the same thing. Pioneer Square merchants have seen a major decline in business since the real trolley/streetcar closed down.

I spent a lot of time on the old trolleys as an employee.

YES. They need cell phone reception down there badly.

I couldn't believe that incident at Westlake. What was "security" doing? ridiculous.
