I have three daughters...13...11...and 6. The cut-off date in GA is Sept. 1st. My oldest daughter's birthday is September 17th (two weeks later than the cut-off) and the other two are in October. I was also concerned about "cut-off dates". Especially, when my oldest knew her entire alphabet and could spell and read words when she was 2 and could read chapter books at the age of 4. She was also able to add in her head at 3 years of age. When she started public school we thought that she would not be challenged but the because there is usually a year to a year and a half age span between the kids ages. Many children are a full year younger than her and some are 1/2 year older than her (we were glad about this! - due to people holding their Spring birthday children back). Usually, the teachers know how to keep the children challenged at different levels. The great thing about all of my girls is that they don't struggle in school, A's come fairly easy and they are more mature than some of their classmates. Also, once they get in to middle school, they are placed in advanced classes. What used to be such a HUGE, BIG issue to me (the same thing that you are going through) has become a non-issue. I am actually glad that they are some of the older kids in their grades and that they can enjoy school as it is not a struggle.

The only way to really get around this rule is to first enroll your child in school in an area where the cut-off is later and s/he qualifies for. Once they have started school and and appear to be doing fine, then you can move to said-area where s/he would normally have wait a year to start, but schools typically accept those students.

I would ask about schools' "grandfathering" policies.

Oh, that's a great idea! I never thought about mid year transfer.
