There might be some smaller trees there, and yes, people lurk there all the time, the more disreputable during darkness, and it's been considered unsavory for as long as I can remember.

The Yesler Terrace neighborhood is low income and right smack in the heart of the city.

Yesler Terrace - Seattle Housing Authority

Then there is also Rainer Vista and New Holly which are only a short bus ride away.

Thanks all. Great info... those projects look awful, too. Though they don't look as bad as the ones in Cincinnati.

There is also low income housing in the downtown proper near the convention center but I don't know the name of it. just that it exists.

Hey guys, I have a related question. Can anyone tell me about how long it would take if someone had to walk from the Frye Apartments to Capitol Hill. It looks like a long hike on a map. Let's assume the character is young and in good shape.

I appreciate all the info you guys have provided.

Depends where on Capitol Hill, but for the purposes of your writing, you'd probably assume it was lower( Southwest) Capitol Hill, an area with a greater concentration of less expensive apartments. In that case, it would be about 1.5 miles, uphill.
Most people take the bus, poor and rich alike. The # 7 is fast, frequent, packed to the gills, and full of characters.

Yes, I realize that, but I need a less than wonderful environment for my story people. My job is to make their lives suck hard.

I have to give them a crappy place to live and send people after them who want to uhhh.....do very bad things to them.

Cheers.

Another less than wonderful area is the area around Harborview Hospital on 1st Hill, the area between downtown and Capitol Hill, and not far from the Yesler Terrace project...The # 3 and #4 buses from downtown to Harborview are the most likely places to find people creating disturbances on their way to the Harborview psych ward.
