We are looking at a house and just notice that in front of the garage(maybe 1m) there's a green box ( i guess it's transformer, size about 1mx1mx0.5m). Originally we are a little concerned about that, but we noticed that every 4~5 houses have one, kinda of hard to avoid... Also, we found on the box, there's energy company's "lanscaping suggestions" , said that the structure and shrubs should keep away from it for a couple feet, but the fact is that the green box is surrounded by the shrubs. (We drive around in the community and find this situation is quite common.)

Landscaping around the green box could lower the noise and make the outside more attractive (compared to expose the box outside). Nowdays the house is built so close and the green box is also close to the house, no space for the shrubs unless build them around the green box... Is it safe? If no trees there, will there be any noise? Any other concerns, like radiation?

Anyone share any thoughts with me? Well, maybe we just think too much...

Nothing to worry about as far as radiation, and there really isn't anything to worry about as long as the box isn't compromised in some way. Noise shouldn't be an issue either.

If you don't like looking at it, you could always get a screen like the kind that go around an outdoor AC unit.

Some examples...

Outdoor a C Unit Screen, Screening Outdoor a/C Units (http://www.improvementscatalog.com/home/diy/outdoor-a-c-unit-screen - broken link)

Probably easy to find at Home Depot, or make your own.

I've also seen fake "rocks" or "boulders" that can be used to cover these up and blend them into the landscaping.

The kids in our neighborhood sit on these and bang on with large sticks daily. I've seen them take the lid off and squirt water guns into them. Sadly, they have yet to hurt themselves.
