My fiance and I are relocating to Seattle to Fort Lewis. I will most likely be working in downtown Seattle. Does anyone have suggestions of areas to live that neither of our commutes will be terrible? I commuted two hours into NYC for two years and refuse to do that again! We were looking in two new developments... one in the graham area and the other in kent, on the eastern side. Any suggestions? Whats the best version of transit and how long do they take?

Fife is a good geographical compromise. DH was stationed at Lewis and I was working in Seattle. Fife was where we were wanting to buy before we got orders to leave.

Graham's traffic is horrible! Assuming that you're working a 9-5 job, you're basically dealing with 4 different sets of traffic. Rt 161 (to get out of Graham), Rt 167 (to get towards Seattle), hwy 18 then onto i5 or i405 then onto i5. You definitely will deal at the very least an hour and a half of traffic. Kent traffic is so-so, depending on which part-- I would suggest that you be closer to i5 for a more direct access to Seattle. But if it's on the Eastern side, that's rt. 167-- just be prepared for the traffic. I would say maybe about an hour.

I second the Fife suggestion. I would also suggest Auburn (western), Federal way, or maybe even living in Tacoma itself and taking the Sounder train to DT Seattle.

We have Sounder trains, and also metro buses. And yes, there are people who uses the trains. There's even more that drive. Our traffic been noted to be as bad as L.A.'s

Default Auburn.Kent

I have seen some nices places on main Street in Auburn that is a block from the train station. Kent too has places about a block from th station. Both are close to 167 if you have to drive.
