Ok, I guess I have to confess a guilty pleasure:

I enjoy reading the 'end of the world' fictional stories.

There are more in print (Or kindle now) but for years, once you'd read Lucifer's hammer, and (what was that one where they lived in Florida and there was a nuclear war?) and the Earth Abides, there wasn't much else.

Then came the online stories written for free, by people who liked writing...

One of those, involved a guy trying to get back home, who came upon a FR-8 bolt action rifle, and opened with him helping this family pushing a cart against a pack of wild dogs...

Later there was a trading center at a former truckstop etc...

I'd like to read it again, but do not know it's name to even begin looking.

Can anyone help me out here?

Default Farnham's Freehold

Is this the book you were thinking about? It is by Robert Heinlein. It's the only thing that I can think of that might come close.

Haven't a clue what story you're looking for. Just had to toss in, because I love this genre of fiction, too.

Alas Babylon. My favorite.
There's also On the Beach, in the classics category, as well as A Canticle for Leibowitz.

Lights Out is now an in-print version of a formerly online book. Not to mention the Deep Winter books, also formerly online, now in print.
I have to say, One Second After is probably my favorite of the newer ones, though. It was a commercial success and there's a reason for it. It was a good read.

I believe the book title you are looking for is Alas Babylon by Pat Frank. It is set in a small central Florida town during and after a nuclear war. The book is over 50 years old and still a great read!

Sorry man I can't begin to help, but have a like request...

On line story of shtf; Family takes off but too late and run out of time, money and fuel. Deeper in the family waste time getting out of home, packing more than they can carry and end up with one of 2 vehicles breaking down, and it ends with a the family getting dead after a daughter is raped at a river crossing. The whole ending kinda sucks since not one of them makes it.

Ring any bells?
