Other than Alaska and Hawaii, what do you think would be the best state to live in when SHTF. Don't just say any state that has wilderness. Say a state!

Any state that is not drought-prone, with lots of rural country side, and pre-existing culture of self-sufficiency.

Bug-out early, get setup. The learning curves are many and it takes time.

The best state to be in when SHTF is the state farthest away from the fan.

the "best" state has abundance of fresh water, forests, access to international border and relatively low population density. I pick Minnesota, although Wisconsin or Michigan are very close.

How many times have we seen this question?

There is no perfect blanket answer because people all want different things. I for one can't stand heat, so the more temperate places like Alabama, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Georgia, Tennessee are just too hot for me.
Other's can't take cold, which knocks most of the northern tier states out of contention for them.

Submariner needs a lot of water, I'm used to drier climates, others thrive in desert conditons.

Being near population centers is never good for survival simply due to competition for resources in tough times, but some folks just can't seem to function without access to what cities offer.

I like having abundant wildlife and mineral resources close to hand, for others, the seas or large bodies of water are what they see as the best option for food and other needs. Others can't handle dangerous wildlife which are endemic where I live which are a hazzard to raising livestock and can be a hurdle to successfully raising your animals, some states have very limited dangerous game, but loads of small game like squirrels, rabbits, possums that would meet all their needs.

The best place is the place that has what you consider vital to how you live.

Taking the advice of someone may or may not meet your needs so all it does is provide a starting point to start your search.

A lot depends on your skill level as well as some places require a lot more knowledge and experience to just live than others. Some climates are far more forgiving, growing seasons vary widely so if you need specific conditions to grow a favorite vegetable or fruit, that will narrow your choices as well.

Most of us that post regularly have found our places that meet our needs, but that says nothing about meeting the needs of the next individual.

It's a question that can't be definitively answered exept by the person who is looking for themselves.

For me, Montana is perfect, but I would never reccomend it to the vast majority of people due to the harsh climate and isolation. I see lots of people come here and try, but very few can handle what life here requires of a person.

I'd say N Cal or SW oregon. NO place really cold, hot, swampy or desert. No place with millions of people within one tankful of gas travel by car. Not right on the coast, but within 200 miles of the coast, cause you'll need salt and iodine. I don't like CA, cause it's very hard to get a CCW gun permit there and they regulate what guns you can buy. the San Andreas Fault is a concern, too, as is the cost of living (for living there NOW).

I voted for California, going with my gut feeling.

I want lots of big trees, no ticks/fleas, no place with lots of snow, steep mountains, or gullies. Some place with salmon runs would be a nice extra. the game, freshwater fish and known edible wild plants will be GONE a month or 2 after shtf. 100's, if not thousands of people intend to go to "your spot", and dozens/scores will get there, too.

Arkansas. Clean and abundant water, forests, farmland, temperate climate, low population density, history of self-sufficiency.

temperate my butt. 100+ and down to zero, with HIGH winds E of Ft Smith, very high humidity (they irrigate for rice growing. Skeeters really bad in such areas. As for Hawaii, you'd have to be nuts. Bad overcrowding and few resources, once there's no ship or plane travel. Alaska, with no planes or ships? forget it.
