Haven't you heard of bear canisters?
There're even collapsible soft ones.
I have used the rigid barrel types, but the collapsible types can still be picked up and carried away. The bear may not be able to open it easily but you can still end up without your food!
Funny... At Grand Teton, I just put a slab of bacon in a tent 50 yards down the way, and slept like a baby. Never even heard the commotion at 3 AM 50 yards down the way....
Most people, when they go camping, do not go to a remote/primitive site, but rather, camp in an area with designated camp spots, which include a leveled place for your tent, and maybe a grill to build your fire under.
They are usually located at regular intervals in areas of federal or state parks. Where I go, there is a cluster of about 100 of them, not far from the edge of a lake, one every 25 yards, more or less.

True, but all the fun stuff like hunting is usually a long way from "improved" campgrounds.
Family vacation, sleeping close enough to the Snake River overlook and Mormon Row to get sunrise pictures of the Tetons from those locations. First and last time ever, too. WAY too many homo sapiens running loose in the parks in the summer time. Bears, cats and snakes bother me not, but the dern homo sapiens could use some serious thinning out, in my not so humble opinion....
