Kansoku, how far "South" are you talking? Near Okeechobee it rains almost every day in the summer (around 3 PM), but it's never a guarantee. I would suggest Central and North Florida (avoiding major cities like Tampa, Orlando & Jacksonville). We are in Live Oak, FL and have had much success with fruits and most other crops. Rain collection and storage is key though.
I think all the fuss about solar may be premature, because from what I hear china is the only place that has the rare earth that batteries need and they are getting low . Maybe I'm wrong but I'd check into to it before I spent lots of money on it .
S. Fl. is a great place now for foreigners , especially spanish and Haiti and Somalians . Others learn the lango before you go ,imo.
Does it rain enough in southern Florida so that you wouldn't have to ever water your fruit trees if you tried to buy some cheap land (I heard that there are some cheap land there; could anyone give me the website where I can check out land prices?) grow fruit trees there?
I too am starting a self sufficient homestead in florida. I am in the process of purchasing 3 acres of land about 20 miles north of Okeechobee. There is pretty affordable land around those areas.

There is plenty of "cheap" land north of Okeechobee, do your research, however, on the quality of land, what's in it and the water you will be using to tend to your crops.
