I would not want to be out and about with all the germ carriers during a pandemic. I've always avoided stores when I know they are going to be busy. You won't see me at the after Thanksgiving or Christmas sales. You also won't see me battling the crowds at the grocery store for the last of the bread and water.
Remember the LA riots? When that happened, people were flocking to the stores, waiting in long lines, stocking up like crazy.
Then what happened? The food prices spiked. I noticed because I was poor, had to carry grocery bags by hand for over a mile. Suddenly I could afford fewer bags. And the bags since then have shrunk in size/capacity!!!
When I was in Hong Kong the US embassy put out a warning to US citizens that they should be prepared to shelter in place for six weeks if there was a bird flu pandemic. I think that's pretty good advice. Having said that, most major grocery store chains have pandemic plans that are intended to let people do "drive by" shopping so exposure risks will be minimized. How well the citizenry will cooperate with that is certainly open to question.
And of course going out for food is not the only reason to go out. Most people have jobs which will not allow them to sit at home for weeks and weeks on end. Even if they did, they would not get paid. Unless you don't have or need a job, you're going to have to be around other people. Getting good masks could help with this situation for those really concerned, I suppose.
Its always good to have both medicines and food handy. Not everyone has the space though, so I guess some will have to perish.
