If they go the RFID tag route, why wouldn't it possible just to tape one of the tags from an actual K-cup in range of the transceiver to bypass it? They must have something else in mind.
The K-cup patent ran out. So now it's open season for others to make K-cups for their machines. These other manufacturers are giving a much larger bang for the buck. So while the patents still exist for their Vue and Rivo they will update those pods to be inline with the new units. So even if the patent runs out, 3rd party companies will need to get chipped cups or licenses from Kuerig. Since the pods are food related, then they cannot be recycled to create new cups.
FWIW
For people that don't know the recycle symbol on containers used to hold food related products are internal recycles. This is made from the trimmings that are left over from the molding process inside the factory. None of it comes from recycled external items.
