They got rid of the $5 footlong, replaced it with $6 6 inch subs with a chips and drink and thought I wouldn't notice.
Exactly but it is worse then that. When they started the $5 footlongs, the food quality went down hill. Suddenly the employees were no longer prepping the food in the store. Instead they were just pouring it out of prepackaged bags, and it was not that good. But you know what? It didn't matter, because it was a $5 footlong. Yeah the sandwich sucked, but it was just $5. But then they started raising the prices, but kept the same low quality food, no, no, no. Sorry Subway, I have been eating with you for 35 years, but that's it. No more. Not paying high prices for low quality food.
Subway needs a drive-thru. Same with Panda Express.
There is at least one down here. I discovered it while I was moving a few weeks ago. It was great because I was hot, sweaty and had a packed SUV with pets in it so I definitely didn't want to stop anywhere but I was starving. That is the first Subway drive thru I have ever seen. I agree that more drive-thrus would boost business. There are many times you don't want to stop and get out of the car...rain, too hot, kids or pets in the car, etc.
I was recently in New York and all of the signage indicated you had to take stairs down below the street to get to their restaurants but could not find a single one down there even after trudging down there in at least a dozen different locations.
Jersey Mike's was good, when I was down there in SD. Forget where the location is, I see it in my head. It's close to a Prometric training center if I recall.
Quiznos is okay, but I'm not a fan of the bread. And they overtoast sometimes. I have to tell them to go light on it. Bread should not be hard, overtoasting dries it out and it's disgusting. That said, they made the best BLT (and it's not even on their menu).
Submarina was awesome. Don't know if the Carmel Mountain location is still there, he was trying to sell it last I was out there. Too bad because I favored the service and sandwiches. I think the Rancho Bernardo store is still there.
Jimmy Johns...it's okay, but sometimes they make their stuff too slimy. I can't explain it any better.
Togos...wasn't impressed. (San Diego) I went there on occasion with co-workers but it wasn't all that. At least not the Rancho Bernardo location.
Mmmm, Schlotsky's. I miss their reubens. Schmaltz is a decent Jewish deli in these parts, and they have a really good whitefish salad.
I've complained about Subway's lack of a drive-thru to my daughter, who works there. She says customers are used to looking at the selections and being involved in their order. They want a few more olives or not so much lettuce, or they want to choose a different bread roll. I always look critically at the tomatoes before allowing one on my sandwich (my Jimmy John's has consistently good tomatoes, while everyone else's are underripe pink stemmy garbage). It's interesting that they're trying the drive-thru but I'm not sure it will take off. A shop would have to hire more people to man the orders and window, and the ROI might not be worth it.
I worked in a little store a couple doors down from Togo's for three years. I am Togo'd out for life.
Wow, I am somewhat pleased to see that others feel much the same way I do about subway. Where I live it seems only Indians have the franchise. A previous poster was right--I can barely understand their questions and when I have to ask them to repeat they look at me like "why are you wasting my time?"
Pandering to Muslims--when in Rome....if they want halal meat, then they should open up their own stores. If one doesn't know about halal, please Google it.
Your neighborhood restaurant or take out will usually offer better food, and you get more bang for you buck. Chinese is always a good option and I get a lot for my money. Pizza (local, not a franchise) lasts two days. And the sandwiches--esp. if you go to an Italian eatery or a Greek diner--they pile on the stuff and you pay just a bit more than the Subway specials. These people (Italians and Greeks) like to feed you like family!
I remember going years ago and the prices were much higher than normal stores..if you look on yelp . You'll see people paid $12 for footlong subs...and that several years back.
There is a chain called Earl of Sandwich in Vegas at several of the casinos and I remember the prices being a lot lower , always seemed to be a line.
I did actually go to Subway yesterday. I had the Turkey Italiano melt, which isn't really that bad as far as Subway goes and has more flavor than most of the subs I think.
I had them toast it more, because usually they will just toast it really quickly.
I wish there were more decent options nearby , my area is really lacking in food options sadly. Even though I'm in L.A I'm not in the cool part of L.A
I used to have Subway every day for lunch last year. I stopped getting it when the quality started to go down. Bread was dry, lettuce was oil, etc. and for some reason they are cutting down on the amount of chicken/bacon/beef they put in the subs. I don't get filled on veggies.
I do think a lot of it has to do with newer competitors.
Even though the food is different, I do see Chipotle as a direct competitor.
Their motto is 'Eat Fresh"..but sometimes you wonder how fresh the stuff really is.
Also I know they make a point of baking their bread in house..but the bread doesn't have much flavor, I feel.
I always liked the sandwiches better at Quiznos or Togos, but I believe Quiznos is in bad financial shape and a lot of stores have closed. Prices are higher though.
Jersey Mikes is another concept that seems to be growing too, their sandwiches are more expensive than subway but a lot better I think.
Quiznos had INSANELY unhealthy subs. When they finally revealed their nutritional facts they quickly topped most charts...
I remember at my University they had one and everytime I ate there I literally felt like I couldnt move and my brain turned off. Talk about food coma..
I used to like Subway, till I discovered Jimmy John's.
And I think the past decade everyone was eating Subway because of the whole health craze it had going for it due to Jared and partnerships with the biggest loser. But it DIDN'T help when they got rid of $5 footlongs (I couldn't even believe it when they told me they didn't do that anymore...), chemicals in the bread, and poor customer service due to short staffed shops. I noticed too that ingredient quality was going downhill as well, and was noticing lots of times shops would be out of common breads or ingredients. They turned into a mess all around.
