2) Sullen insincere mumblings of one, with no eye contact.

3) Pleasant greeting and thank you. (Yay!)

4) #3 accompanied by “Did you find everything you need?” Which if I reply “No I didn’t,” doesn’t generate any further comment about how to resolve it. So why ask?

I don't care if the cashier makes eye contact or a greeting. I only expect this if it's a salesperson.

I agree for the most part. In my opinion a simple acknowledgement of the customer a.k.a. hello and thank you is sufficient. Too much eye contact for a simple point-of-sale transaction can be kinda creepy. It's why I will gravitate to the self checkouts if they are available.

This is more than enough.

Not sure what's the fuss about demanding an "eye contact".

Low wage workers who stand for 8 hours. Seriously, WTF do you want out of their struggling lives?

Actually I would tend to believe most cashiers are part time and not working full 8 hour shifts but your point is still valid in that the job is not pleasant. I strongly agree that people need to lay off on the chattiness, eye contact and other bullcrap. What is most important is the order being rung up correctly and promptly with acknowledgement of the customer.

I work between 4 hours and 8 hours per shift according to what is on my work schedule.

There is one front-end cashier who does work 8 hours per shift, 40 hours a week at the location we both work at.

I want limited engagement with cashiers, the same with waiters/servers (But that is another post) I don't need any social interaction with a cashier, I don't enjoy shopping so the faster I am out of there the better tempered I am! If I only have a few groceries I am going to the self checkout!

Cashiers-Scan my groceries quickly! (I want to watch to make sure my items scan at the correct price!)

Take my coupons if I have any! (No need to ask if I found everything or give commentary on items I bought.)

Give me the total and give me my cash back if I wanted any.

Hand me my receipt! (Do not address me by my name, I prefer my privacy!)

Do not ask me to sign up for a loyalty card or ask for charity or try to up sell me! If I wanted those things I would have dealt with it before I came to the checkout line!

I have run into this more than once. If I mention something that I didn't find, it is usually met with silence. I also wonder why the question is asked. If I did find everything, I don't need further help. If I didn't, it goes nowhere.
