I look online at her store circulars to tell her what is on sale for the week (I thought folks could figure that out

To be honest, store circulars seem to have lost much purpose since their heyday. If you need groceries, you go buy them, and if something's on sale, you make the choice about it. I don't know anyone who waits for a sale on ham hocks to rush off to the store. They also used to have unique coupons, but I haven't seen a store flyer with such for quite a while.

And what little I pay attention, they're often available as you enter the store, so you can glance at them to make sure you don't miss a sale item.

Am I missing something?

I think many frugal people plan their meals for the upcoming week around what's on special and may even go to multiple stores to take advantage of different sale prices in each. I would think there's less of the latter going on right now. My local grocery chain sends me e-mails with specials and they're rarely relevant- processed foods I don't eat, for example, or meat, which I minimize in my diet. I just go there and shop for my usual stuff, keeping an eye on specials in the Produce section. The paper circulars are at the door but I don't even pick one up.

I can see that. I used to shop three different stores, but I did it in rotation over the course of a week and didn't really have to plan what I was going to buy at each one; I knew a good price when I saw it.

I guess if you want to limit driving or extra trips, being able to plan is good.

But as you say, the flyer or circular has to list things of interest, and I've never seen one long enough to be of universal appeal. May tend to be filled with manufacturer offers for things I wouldn't buy anyway

Truly relics of another time, I think. This attempt to use it as bait may be a last-ditch effort.

I kept seeing ads for a website with pretty clothes. I went to the site, but they required registration before I could even look at the merchandise. I didn't register.

The company I work at has experimented a few times with eliminating mailers, because of the cost, it's always been a bust and they always bring them back. However I feel that in another ten years they will be a thing of the past as newer generations prefer newer technology.
Many coupons and special store offers are available only online or through an app now.

I use the online circulars to load coupons, and to plan my shopping trips. I pass three different grocers during the week, it's handy to know which store has the best sale prices on the items I need (and you can look up regular prices at some stores too). I don't feel like what I do is all that uncommon.

Yep. For those who identify themselves.

Well, you've moved to a more modern phase. But printed or online, the concept of a grocery store circular just seems so... 1950s to me. I'm considerably pre-millennial and have done shopping for a large family for most of my life, but I never found them useful in any way. I suspect inertia and just enough of a customer base that expects them (but perhaps doesn't really use them) that they persist.

And all the e-versions are something else in disguise, anyway.

The online only deals are an attempt to get people weened off relying on paper circulars. (although the collecting and selling of data plays a part too) It's a large expense that companies would like to be rid of. We've been trying to get rid of mailers and newspapers inserts for at least ten years now. The pushback from customers has been enough to make that effort fail, but the last several years have seen a lot more acceptance of shopping with apps.

So what, they already got your data for the tags you need to have coupons. That alone gets them all the data they need to know your buying habits.

Nope.

Coupons are anonymous unless they are the bar-coded ones given to you as checkout prizes. Unless you've provided a 'rewards card' number, the transaction is anonymous to their system.
