Hi people of Sioux Falls! Im planning to relocate in a month or two. I am a teacher, and i am planning to pursue my teaching job there in SF. Is it hard to teach in SF? Is it hard to deal with parents and coworkers? Are the children respectful?
The hard part will be finding a job. You didn't specify what your area/age range is, but getting an el-ed position in the SF district is especially challenging. With several colleges in the area pumping out eled grads every year, SF being the largest town and commercial hub for the area, and young people wanting to stay close to home, there are MANY applicants for every open position for all of the districts in the SF area. Even getting on the substitute list for the SF district has been challenging some years.
Also, while SF is the highest paying district in the state, South Dakota does rank 51st in the nation (states+DC) in teacher pay, so know what you're getting into.
As far as the kids/families, it's going to be pretty standard middle of the road - nothing really serious.
Agree 100% with above. No major behavioral problems or anything compared to a lot of places. Biggest issue is probably lack of motivation if anything. Job will be hard to find.
Sister is a teacher and she had connections its VERY VERY HARD to get a teaching job in Sioux Falls, My Brothers in law's brothers wife lives in Sioux Falls but has to teach in Iowa.
Thank you for those who replied....I have a master's degree in education and have a bachelor's degree in biology...30 years old...ok now I know that i should not expect for me to teach in sioux falls.... i guess i have to find another job. Again thank you
I guess someone should point out that there are other towns around here if you wanted to drive 15-45 minutes every day to work. Brandon, Tea, etc. are all basically self contained suburbs if that makes sense. Harrisburg is what my wife describes as South Dakota's first REAL suburb. They are all growing and have schools so you might want to check there.
Pay at Brandon Valley and Harrisburg is on a par with Sioux Falls' pay. Both communities are constantly adding teachers due to growth. Harrisburg just announced that they have plans to build a 4th grade school within the Sioux Falls city limits. They'll be opening this fall with their 3rd grade school in Sioux Falls along with a 2nd new middle school which is located in Sioux Falls.
I'll ditto what others have said about needing connections to get a teaching position in Sioux Falls. Very political. You're not a fresh graduate and this does work in your favor. Also, it appears that your subject will be science which eliminates some competition (i.e. you're not an elementary teacher).
Very informative and helpful suggestions!!! I would take that with me...thank you!
