We are looking into moving to Sioux Falls this spring/summer and my elementary school kids will start there next fall. I would like to know which school everyone would suggest. We are planning on taking a trip there after the holidays to get an idea of the houses that are available and it would be nice to have an idea of what part of town we should concentrate on or school boundary we should aim to stay in.
Thanks so much for any help!

The Sioux Falls school district allows open enrollment, so if you find a neighborhood/house you really like outside the boundaries of the school you want, it's not a huge deal...unless your kids will be walking or taking the bus.

As far as which schools are the best, I would suggest taking a look at the website below. It gives all sorts of information about each elementary school. Take a look at the data sheets under each school's profile.

Sioux Falls School District

Where are you moving from?

Thanks so much for the info! We just moved in Sept. back to my hometown, Granite Falls, MN. We lived in O'Fallon, IL, (outside St. Louis), for the last 5 yrs. My husband separated from the Air Force in 2003 and we settled near Scott AFB. We always wanted to move closer and an opportunity came up for him to telecommute. After we sold our home there, we decided to rent in my hometown, (my family is all still here), until we decide where we want to settle and buy. We LOVE Sioux Falls and would be a perfect fit for us. We both went to college in Brookings and came down to Sioux Falls a lot during that time.

When we bought our house in IL, we didn't have any kids in school yet so we didn't do our research. We loved our house, but would have preferred a different school for our kids. We don't want to make that mistake again. It's nice to know they can choose schools in S.F.

I would have to say that most all of the elementary schools in Sioux Falls (even the Metro) are really great schools. All have recieved very high marks. Schools that I usually thought high of are:
- Robert Frost
- John Harris
- Harrisburg Explorer (81st West of Louise)
- Harrisburg Journey (LaQuinta East of Western Ave, W. of Minnesota)

But all the schools in the Metro are amazing, and all are well above national average academically so whichever school zone your house is in, the school will be great.

So do you think the SW part of town is a good place to buy or doesn't it really matter?
Thanks again for the info!

The SW would be a good place to look. They are building a new elementary school on the very far SW side. Discovery is a new building on the westside, and I've heard good things about JFK and Oscar Howe. You might want to check out the eastside of the city too.

I think if you want a tour of the school, the principal would be happy to show you around.

The historic district in the downtown area is beautiful and very close to Hawthorne Elementary. Our son went to school there and loved it. The teachers are great and really take an interest in each student individually.

Wow, looks like I can't go wrong wherever we choose to buy! That is so great! I'm still trying to get a hold of the realtor. My husband's work schedule is so crazy right now so the only time we can come look is Jan. 2nd and 3rd. Nice timing isn't it? UGH!
