Why is Sioux Falls thriving but Sioux City (Iowa, SD & NE) is declining? (Watertown: condo, credit card)

That sewer reputation is true. The old rendering plant and water treatment facility on I-29 give Sioux City that terrible smell as you enter town. Its been that way since at least the 70s. Eliminating those two awful smells would really help the town but I doubt they will ever move those.

I didn't know that... Interesting... I always thought it was the adjacent John Morrell plant that is next to I-29... which is now closed I believe.
I hate the 2 lanes each way on I-29 through Sioux City... and if you're in the left lane, there's a concrete median inches from your side mirror. It's scary.
In general about the only places in Iowa that seem to be growing or at least holding their own are Des Moines, Cedar Rapids, Iowa City, and possibly Ames, Council Bluffs, Waterloo/Cedar Falls, and the Quad Cities. The state has not moved much beyond agriculture and is suffering rural flight because of it. I believe Nebraska is the same city. When you get one city in a grouping like that that does diversify and grow, it is hard for the others to keep up. Just my theory.

The SD side has a cleaner feel to it... I absolutely hate driving through Sioux City on my way down south..[/quote]
Oh, I know what you mean! My wife and I just came back from a trip to Rapid City on Tuesday. We stopped to eat and get gas in Sioux Falls. My wife made the comment that it seemed like a nice town. Well, we got back on I-29 and headed south. Once we crossed the borded into Iowa it was an instant difference. We talked about it a little bit as we continued through Sioux City. We figured it was simply because of the packing plants as to why it feels dirty. Just like you MJ1986, I don't like driving through it either! No disrespect to those that live their though!
Brian, I know how you feel, I feel all dirty when I drive your Iowa. It would have been nice to route I-29 down the west side of the Missouri River just skipped Sioux City.

Council Bluffs is not so bad
I agree. The last time I drove through Sioux City was on my way home from Sioux Falls. I was behind a semi driver who was obviously falling asleep and swerving all over the interstate. It would have been a very bad accident. Scary!
Man someone who cares about Iowa should forward this to the Sioux City Mayor's office and to good ol' Demoines...Maybe they'd get a clue.
LOL, yeah right! It has been as bad as it is now for a long time. I doubt they have any desire to make it better. However, here is a video of people that LOVE Sioux City!!!
