I know plenty people that would favor Sumter including myself. I have people from Camden at my work place, and I know several who have moved to Sumter from Camden. Camden only advantage is it's closeness to Columbia in my opinion. I never ever go there for anything, just don't like the feel of the place. I was there a few months ago to visit a former pastor in the hospital, and felt like I went through a time warp.
I agree. I can see the appeal of Camden as a quiet bedroom community for Columbia but I don't see much more potential than that. Sumter on the other hand may have some real issues, mainly with negative perception but has far more growth potential. For whatever reason, it is underperforming in amenities (retail/dining) for the industry base that is here. I'm not sure if that lies with a systematic problem with attracting businesses here, bad perception as I mentioned, or we just simply get overlooked in between Columbia and Florence.
I've lived here for about 8 years and can only wonder what this town would look like if not for the Great Recession. My hope is that there is a tipping point or threshold we have yet to cross, that slowly gets closer, but once achieved will see this community explode. I think we were REALLY close to that "critical mass" juuust before the recession and then all momentum was lost.
Can anyone tell me what this might be in regards to new industry or is it clearing in-case of a potential buyer? The first three are pictures from a shop at the corner of North Wise Drive and Jefferson Road. Caterpillar is just across the street on the left. The next two are of a smaller clearing also on N. Wise just behind this one.

Camden has marketed itself as a Revolutionary War Town so that time warp is likely intentional on their part . Seems like they are marketing themselves to the Revolutiionary War as Charleston does to the Civil War and Antibellum South. Wasn't the movie The Patriot Filmed in Camden? That along with horse racing seems to be their niche

You are probably right about that, but I'm not sure if still have the horse races. I believe it is called the Carolina Cup, I just never hear anybody talking about it.
A small stand alone building is going up in Palmetto Plaza on the spot of the old Texaco station. Very small. Not sure what it could be.
Lots of activity downtown. New hotel to be open in March. I hear a pizzeria/microbrewery is in the works. The new Hampton’s with its huge outdoor pavilion is almost ready to open. Another bakery coming as well.
Pelican's SnoBalls is on the sign in front of that building. Should do really well with kids when the weather gets hot.

I recall charter buses from USC going up there in droves in the early 2000s sponsored by Frat Boys. Then I think they started to get out of hand and got scaled back though I believe the the races still happen. Aiken seem to be attempting to edge inon their market though I don't know if Aiken actually has a race as opposed to simply breeding and possibly training. Other than the Iris Festival which I have heard has gotten larger Not sure if Sumter has anything else ...maybe "shawfest " or something out there ? At any rate Sumteris growing SLOWLY despite the fact that it has no interstate no mountains no beaches and is not part of a major metro. Columbia and Florence are certainly having an impact but the Gamecock City strives on
It seems that downtown has finally started to hit its stride . I recall in the 90s at a city council meeting some residents were really upset that city would "spend one red cent on downtown... it's a crime infested dump and nobody is going to go down there unless their lookin for a wig and Chinese food"my how far we have come .....
