I realize that Wagener is a tiny little town. It's about 30 minutes from Aiken. Please explain how Wagener can be called a part of Augusta, Georgia's metro area. I'm not used to different states "sharing" towns/metros etc. In VT, VT is VT; NH is NH, etc. Things are really different and I am really trying to understand things like this.

Aiken and Edgefield counties are included in the Augusta-Richmond County, Georgia-South Carolina, Metropolitan Statistical Area. One reason for the inclusion is the commuting from Aiken and Edgefield counties to Augusta-Richmond County for work.
Chester, Lancaster, and York counties are included in the Charlotte-Concord-Gastonia, North Carolina-South Carolina, metropolitan statistical area.
If you worked in this "area" which includes 2 states, how do they figure what taxes to take out of your paycheck? Does it depend on where you live vs where you work?

If you worked outside South Carolina, I assume you would have to file with both the state you reside in and the state(s) you worked in.

The Augusta, GA MSA includes Aiken County, SC. It's the same as Rockingham and Strafford counties in NH being in the Boston, MA metropolitan statistical area.

There's a city named North Augusta, SC within steps of downtown Augusta, Georgia... Aiken and Edgefield counties help make up the Augusta MSA..
