Woopig, I've got to say you are moving into a real treacherous area. When you come in from Hill city, you drop down over a large hill into Custer. hahaha I've gotten more tickets on that hill then anywhere else. The local county mounty sets about half way down the hill. When you hit the top, the speed limit drops considerably. He'll get ya. hahaha So be careful. Once you overcome that, Custer is an outstanding little quiet town. Wonderful people, friendly, not clanish. You'll enjoy it. Just watch that hill.
All I can give you is a tourist reaction. Wife and I camped in a federal park outside of Custer. Had a great time. Wild strawberries on a nearby hill overlooking some water. Inside Custer ther's a terrific buffet on the main street. I wonder if the movie theater is still there. Can't recall last time. Yes, there's a sort of DQ there. Nice big grocery store. We noticed new homes to the east inside Custer. And there area some very nice homes up on the big hill and winding down through a Canyon.
Custer used to have a used book store. We are readers. So we spent most of the day reading. Then wh00ped it up at night in one of the saloons. I'm into soda pop or near beer, so it was fun to see everyone else make a fools of themselves from drinking alcohol. Custer is pretty much the last scenic town stop on the way west. Next stop is Denver.
Rapid City is in the path of a chinook, a warm air pathway that comes through the area in the winter. It can be 60 degrees in RC at times. Don't know if that warm air makes it over the Black Hills to Custer though.
One big attraction near Custer is the Black Hills Playhouse, which is the summer workshop the University of South Daktoa theater department. And Custer itself has a summer evening skit called something like "The Hanging of Fly Speck Billy."
The Crazy Horse memorial is near there and a winding road that goes waaaay to a fantastic view of the BHs.
