I hear thru the grapevine there's been an fair sized layoff, in Watertown, nut can't find a link for it..
Is this going to be the new ''norm''? Have we already become so accustomed to layoffs, that it doesn't make the news?

That's an interesting thought and you're probably right. Did you know that the dollar store on Havens is closing, too? (Mitchell)

More bad news~Hutchinson Technologies in Sx. Falls is closing so another 300 people will be out of work in the next 3 months.

Also, Sapa Extrusions, an aluminum firm in Yankton, is laying off 15% of their workforce which will be another 40 to 45 people losing their jobs.

Angus-Palm ‘temporarily’ cuts 10 percent of its workforce (http://www.thepublicopinion.com/articles/2009/01/17/news/local_news/local06.txt - broken link)

Could this be what you're talking about Debey? I couldn't read the full article because it was archived and you have to pay to do so.

The article date was Jan. 17, 2009

We no longer have the lowest rate in the nation for unemployment. They released the figures and we're up to 3.9% and that is a month behind. There have been several more layoffs since then. The Gov. thought it wouldn't be that high until the end of next year, but it happened sooner. It's still much lower then the national percentage, but I don't know what that has moved to.

Wyoming and North Dakota now have the lowest unemployment rates. They didn't actually say where we were placed.

I found this website tonight just surfing the net and thought it was interesting, I think the numbers they are using are multiplied by the people in the state, South Dakota has what 860,000 people now?

Really? Is our population that high now? And yup, I just did a quick search and we are third. That's not as good as the number one spot like we were, but you've got to check out the unemployment rate in some states. Unfortunately, Gov. Rounds said things will get worse and he doesn't know where the bottom will be.

2006 estimate is 782,000... 860,000 seems a bit high though.
The good thing is that we are in much better shape than some states!
