Maybe it's the season, but I was wondering if schools in Spokane still did traditionial/non-secular/Christian based choir music? In my experience they don't do it hardly anymore in the Everett School district and it bugs the heck out of me.
I grew up here and they tried to pull that when I was in high school 25 years ago. Dave Cross came over from University High in Spokane and said if they wanted him they'd have to allow non-secular music because if you were going to have a well-rounded program you needed to learn that stuff, too. They relented. Not anymore though. I don't know if it's policy or just the teachers. They seem to sing anything but stuff that's Christian--old or new(which, to me, has made their Winter concerts a joke because they've sung Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, and Ramadan music). Oh, unless it's a Negro spiritual...that's a perfectly PC thing to sing as opposed to something with an excelsis deo or keria elason in it(Pardon any misspelling. My Latin's kinda rusty). You can forget about Silent Night or Hark the Herald Angels!
I have nothing against singing music from other races or religions--bring it on!!! I just think that they're missing out on a huge part of music history when they exclude certain pieces because of a Christian theme, as well as excluding representing the majority of people that believe in Christ because the school or the teacher doesn't want to step on anyone's toes. :~/ D
