When the Hornets were looking to leave Charlotte, Louisville and Norfolk were two canadites the team was interested in, neither of these cities have major-league teams. From what I remember, the City Council of Louisville didnt want a team at all, and I think Norfolk didnt have the money for an arena at the time.
I cant see Norfolk getting a major-league team unless one of D.C's or North Carolina's teams move there. The area is huge in population and I think they would support any of the 4 major leagues, but the city is just too close to NC and DC.
Louisville could do well for NHL or NBA, the latter is a better choice as basketball is big in Kentucky.
Albuquerque in a few years could be a choice for the NFL or NBA, the whole state of New Mexico plus parts of western texas could draw fan support. Des Moines in the same sense could too, get support fron Iowa, but may be too close for Minnesota's comfort.
Kansas City may get the NHL or NBA

Today is the deadline for expansion bids for 2012 Major League Soccer expansion. The following cities have submitted bids with a few hours left to go:

Ottawa - Canada
Vancouver
Montreal
Portland
St. Louis
Miami
Atlanta

Two cities will be selected in the spring. These will likely be the next cities to receive professional sports teams in a US pro league.

St. Louis and Portland appear to be favorites but one of the Canadian cities could be selected as well.

I am doubtful on Miami and Atlanta but those two have deep pockets because Arthur Blank is behind the Atlanta bid and Spanish superclub Barcelona is behind the Miami bid.

I've always been a little surprised that the NBA never took a shot at a team in Louisville. The old ABA Kentucky Colonels were pretty successful.

It will be interesting to see if the NBA stays out of Seattle as well. Pretty large market to lose (TV ratings wise).

How exactly would the NBA take a shot at Louisville? The NBA doesnt own the teams or place teams in cities. In order for a team to represent a city, it must have an owner. The owner must submit an expansion bid to the league to be reviewed.

Without an owner, a city does not get a team. So, the reason that Louisville does not have a NBA team playing in it is that it has never had a qualified ownership group place a bid.

...Miami, Atlanta, and Ottawa were also serious contenders. The expansion franchises were awarded to Vancouver and Portland for 2011. Atlanta, Montreal, and Ottawa are the favorites for the next MLS expansion.
