Headed out for first round of Players.....good pairings. It has been a decent few days here in JAX. Had a Tiger sighting my first morning out here.....
Well, I just saw what was apparently an ad for driving the ball an extra 20 yards. I clicked on it and it was just that; an ad talking about some gizmo to help a person's swing. The ad annoyed me.
I'm now in my 60s. My story begins about 40 years ago and ends about 30 years ago. I'll begin. I was never been able to drive a ball over about 190 yards on the carry. I went to the grandfather/instructor of British Open winner Ben Curtis (long before Ben ever won a golf tournament). He examined my swing and he gave me some tips that were essentially mind-image techniques. When all was said and done, I drove the ball 190 yards. Another person advised me to change my grip to provide better wrist flexibility. Once I got used to the new grip, I was driving the ball 190 yards. I decided I would go to a pro and get custom-made clubs fitted for my game. They were really nice clubs. They allowed me to drive the ball 190 yards.
Finally I went to a pro who had been mentioned to me by ex-NBA star Bill Hosket. He looked at my stance and analyzed my swing. He told me that the reason why I was not hitting the ball for distance was the fault of my father, my mother, or perhaps both. I had a simple lack of natural handspeed and without using illegal equipment, I would likely not hit the ball much farther than I currently was.
A year or two after that teaching lesson, I was playing a par-3 over water that required about a 180 yard carry. There was a decent headwind. I was playing with three other guys who I did not know, two of these guys were probably in their 60s. I stood there on the tee and announced I could not carry the water, not with a headwind in my face. The three guys, all of whom had played to the green with fairway woods or irons, chuckled and doubted my words. I pulled out my driver and hit the TopFlite flush. The ball dropped into the water about five yards short of the green. It took me four strokes to play around the small lake. At the end of the round I took my custom-made clubs home, put them in the basement, and never played again. A few years ago I gave them to a local thrift shop.
When I saw that ad about driving the ball an extra 20 yards, all it did was make me mad. Sorry if I took it out on this thread.

Couldn't rep ya again. But nice pics, thanks for sharing.
Saw a lot of Phil and Tiger today on the practice tee, short game area - just lucky, I guess as both of them used the back part of the tee rather than the main tees, and I was back there following the big group (McIlroy Spieth, Day).....things worked out just fine today.
Hell of an entertaining tournament. Great win for Fowler. But was actually more impressed with Kisner. Just goes to show how deep this tour is.
