Hello! I will be moving there this summer. I was looking at the elementary school hours (9:05am - 3:30pm) and was wondering for those whose parents both work, do business start at 9am instead of 8am in St. George? Perhaps some flexibility in work hours? or if not, what happens to the kids prior to 9am??? Also, would like to know the best Elementary/High Schools in the area... Thanks a million!

I don't live in Utah, but here in San Diego we have a "before and after school program" at the elementary school where my son goes. It is a program where school children can be dropped off before school or go there after school, or both, where they are supervised by adults. Of course, like any service there is a fee and it is expensive here. I'm not sure if there is a Boy's and Girl's Club in Utah, but I know they have before/after school programs too. Best of luck to you.

Wisconsinite, look at www.washk12.org or www.wash.k12.ut.us. I found both in the search. I prefer schools on the East side; Panorama Elementary, Pine View Middle and High School, because my kids went there. Good luck.

Hello again I don't have kids in school right now, mine are younger. I do have several friends who both work and they pretty much have either flexible job hours, work things out with each other's schedules so one parent is there to drop off/pick up kids or they do daycare-- some will bus kids to the schools (that was kindergarten/preschool though so I don't know what arrangements can be made for older kids). Another option is carpool and/or in-home childcare where the kids can go after school until parents get off. I don't remember the ages of your kids, I do remember you have one in High School and one in Elementary/close to middle school age? So you can also check into after school programs like clubs, sports, etc. Also, many or most schools have what they call 'early out Fridays' depending on the school you attend they get out anywhere from 1 to 2.5 hours early. You may want to take that into consideration when planning work and schedules.

I worry about that too. I'm a working single mom and my 10 yr old is home about 30 min. before school alone. I know 4 or 5 other children in my neighborhood who do the same thing. Lucky they have eachother to walk to school with. Maybe we could put our heads together and start something. As far as I have seen there aren't any options. I would be happy to pay if it ment peace of mind that my child was safe and arriving to school on time.
