Hi, I hope some of you out there can help me. I grew up in St. Louis Hills and loved it but haven't lived in Missouri for quite some time. I am now moving back with my husband and two small children from Hawaii. We loved Hawaii but cannot afford the lifestyle. I am not that familiar with St. Louis despite growing up there! Here are some of my questions:

1. Any recommendations on a neighborhood within about 20 minutes from St. Louis Hills (near family) that has very nice homes for no more than 300,000?
2. Recommendations for a neighborhood near something 'outdoors'.....river, body of water, parks, hiking trails, etc.?
3. Near a great YMCA or rec. center. I would like to take my children to classes for toddlers (i.e. swim or gymnastics), husband wants to find a basketball league and I would like to work out.
4. Great public school district. I went to private. We would love private but aren't sure that we could afford it since our kids are so close in age. I cannot find info. on the internet to compare the public school districts?! I have heard good things about Rockwood and Parkway.
5. Looking for an outdoor public pool or subdivision pool. Subdivision with a pool, tennis, etc. would be a plus!

We would also consider parts of IL but I prefer slightly west of the city and St. Charles is too far for us.
THANK YOU FOR ANY SUGGESTIONS!!!!

What about Richmond Heights? You're not far from St. Louis Hills, near Forest Park and the Zoo. It also has a community center you can join with indoor pool and a gym with workout equipment. I live in Richmond Heights and really like it. Some areas of Richmond Heights are in the Clayton School district, which has good schools.

Olivette or U. City are both close by and could be a good choice. U. Ciry has a great pool and rec center. Look in the area around Flynn Park school for great older homes and and a nice neighborhood right by Wash U. Olivette is just west of there, homes more ranch style modern, much better schools in general and maybe 10 minutes from STL Hills. No pool or rec center but we use the one in U. City since we used to live there and can do w/o being a resident, only 10 minutes away.

Olivette is definitely beyond 10 minutes from St. Louis hills, though obviously makes sense. Richmond Heights is a good choice w/ kids in public school, central, but with good schools.

Thanks everyone! There are so many choices! We are thinking of expanding our search. We like Fenton and will continue to look in that area. Richmond Heights and Olivette are great suggestions but seem too congested for us. I'm sure it will improve when 40 is complete. Does anyone know much about Wildwood or Columbia, IL? I guess of utmost importance are things to do with our little ones...Thanks for your input and suggestions. I'm glad I found this site.

If you want things to do with your little ones I can't imagine why you'd move out to the far flung exurbs like Wildwood and Columbia, IL. If you want less congestion, but still access to the city I think Fenton (the part in Rockwood schools) is probably a pretty good call for you.

as a recent transplant to fenton, i highly recommend it. it is close to the attractions of the city- my husband works near downtown and is only a 20 minute commute. there is a large beautiful rec center here with an indoor pool. there is nearby shopping, gravois bluffs has the super walmart and target, and west county center mall is not far either. we are in rockwood school district, which i hear is excellent (we send our kids to private schools).
