Looks like it needs nothing but a few new ceiling fans, taxes reasonable for 2,000 sq. ft and 1/2 acre. Not saying anyone should buy this, as I don't know much about the situation, but just remarking about what a nice house this is.

True and there are a couple of lake beaches not too far away either. Not far from shopping as well. That zip code grew by just over 25% in population between 2000-2010 too.

Let's face it, while there are cheap homes in the South and low taxes, you're gonna have a real hard time finding a house near a large lake that's 2,000 sq. ft for this price. Even with taxes and only 10% down, this house could be $1000 a month.
So, if you can make $35k, and your SO can make $35k, you're making $70k combined and have a mortgage and full tax payment of $12k a year. Leaving $58k for other costs. These are assuming very low salaries too. $2k would be needed for a definite week-long trip to Florida or Vegas in February.
If one of you lost your job, you're still around 35% of your gross salary going toward housing.
Like I've mentioned before, I'm writing this not to convince anyone of anything, but to kinda work things out for myself, and if anyone is helped along the way, so be it. If I'm wrong, tell me so, but I'm just not seeing how Upstate NY is all that expensive.

Without even looking at this site, I basically had it right on with the average household income being $70k.
Not sure but for some reason I thought Cicero was a majority Italian area. It looks like 30% German, 27% Irish, and 16% Italian. Not that it matters, I don't care, at least there will be a few of my fellow guidos there

It depends on the part of the town, but like you mentioned, anywhere in the Northern suburbs and you will see quite a few people of Italian descent.
Wow......Umm, I'll say more of the first. Honestly, you don't really see Italian dudes with blowouts here in the Syracuse area. You are more likely to see them with a fade, ceasar, bald or whatever else.
