Since the OP mentioned substitute teaching as an option I wanted to let you know that in NY state you cannot sub more than 40 days in any single district (that's overall, not in one specific assignment) if you do not have a NY State teaching certificate. My wife and I have both subbed and she learned this the hard way. If you are able to sign up in multiple districts you're allowed 40 days in each district and that could get you through the school year. But in this economic climate of laid off teachers, there are so many people subbing (it's also a very flexible job for people who are unemployed and need "time to look") that many districts will not even take sub applications right now or are only hiring laid off teachers.
I live downstate close to the CT border, so I sub in CT a lot (as has my wife), you only need a Bachelors degree in anything there to sub all school year (I also have a CT teaching certificate in middle school math), but in Syracuse your nearest border is Canada......
Most states have looser subbing requirements than NY, that's why I wanted to mention it.
I guess I must have the "southern" view of humidity since I was in FL. The only thing that really bothered me this year was that disgusting heat wave. You would think the breeze would cool you off, but nope... it was literally all just hot air! I was miserable then!
Sidenote - Sean, funny you should mention Forestport because that's where my family's camp is. LOVE it up there!
I just had to come in from the shop(cleaning day anyway) for this.
Do you know Bonnie's Country Store??
Two Summers ago I was picking up some lumber in Port Leydon and figgered what the heck I'd take the dawgs swimming either at Snowbird or in the Woodhull. I stopped at the store and wow what memories. It hasn't changed a single bit. We started going there in the 70's and it was Summer Country Store. About that time Bonnie bought it or changed the name or whatever. I shot a short video on the POS cell phone I had back then and put it on FB. I have no family left in NY so it brought back alot of good memories. By the early 80's I was out of school and working so never had a chance to get back again. My parents sold the place in 89 when my sister got out of school and they all left NY forever.

Oh sorry... our house isn't on a lake, but it's just up the road from Kayuta. Bonnie's Country Store doesn't ring a bell, but I've more than likely been there. My dad/stepmom have had the land up there since I was in middle school - the house has only been built for about 4 years now. But we used to go up there camping and such before the house was built.
Some others that have that New England look that haven't been mentioned are: Cazenovia, Skaneateles, Marcellus, Aurora, Oswego(somewhat) and some communities further out into the Finger Lakes like Seneca Falls, Waterloo, Geneva(somewhat), Watkins Glen and Canandaigua.
Its across from the Buffalo Head. I think that exact area is called Forrestport Depot.
If you can help it never go there in May. I remember the first time I took my own family up to the ADK's in May. We got out of the car at a small lake near Speculator. Them black flies was on them kids like a horde out of the Bible. I of coarse knew better then to get out of the car.

Good idea about Watkins Glen! (trying to rep you, but it won't let me )
What about some places in the Albany area, such as Saratoga?

Oh man Buffalo Head makes a KILLER peanut butter pie!!! When I go there, even if I'm full from dinner, it's a requirement to get that pie!
