Sure, the ipad died 4 days before the Applecare warranty ran out so I filed a claim for a replacement ipad. Apple replaced my ipad 1 with another ipad 1 since the warranty is "like for like".

In the process of doing all this I decided to upgrade to a ipad 3 32 gb refurb unit. Got a great price but in truth for my use the ipad 1 is way plenty of tablet. My wife now plays on the ipad 1 or the grandkids do when they visit.

Yay! I'm so glad the iPad death occurred before the warrantee ran out! And I think you were wise in taking the upgrade: that way in the future you might expand your use of the device. At least you have the power & technology to do so if you desire. Good option to have.

Battery replacement service may be organised by your localized Apple Retail shop or apple Authorized Service Provider, or you can contact apple Tech Support.
