My daughter, an artist, wants to have a drawing tablet for her birthday. Do I just got to a place like Fry's and ask them? How much do these things cost? I don't want to spend a fortune but she says she can draw on it while using the paint program instead of using the mouse, which takes longer. Any recommendations?
I'd recommend going with Wacom. They're the leader in tablets and the most durable. They also come with all kinds of software for drawing that she'll love.
Their "casual user" tablet is called Bamboo (used to be Graphire). Those start at $100 or so new, but Wacom sells refurbs on their site for less.

Newegg has a new Wacom Bamboo for $70. Newegg.com - WACOM Bamboo Touch 4.9" x 3.4" (125mm x 85mm) Active Area USB Tablet - Tablets
A tablet can be very useful for a lot of things. It's worth it to get a good one that will stand up to use. I've got Wacom tablets I've been using for 10 years and they're still working perfectly. Not pretty, but work great.
i second the wacom idea. i'm currently saving up for one of the professional models (next month!). i have used other brands, and wacom is superior by leaps and bounds.
I have a Wacom Bamboo, got it on Amazon last winter for less than $100. It works fine for me with Corel Painter Essentials, Artweaver, and Windows Paint.
The working area on mine is about 4"X6". It is small, I guess. I've never had a bigger one, though, so I don't know how it compares to working with a bigger tablet.
It's not too small at all. You're looking at the monitor while you're drawing, not the tablet, so the pad seems the same size as the monitor. It matches the space on the tablet to the monitor much closer than a mouse pad does.
There are bigger pads but those are the pro models and you're talking $500 and more plus they take up a lot of room on the desk.
Ok. I guess that makes sense. I see a Bamboo Fun Touch and Pen on the WAcom website. Any experiences with this one? It's $99
