So I'm on the computer a a half hour or so ago when I see something scurry across the floor. This sucker is fast! I somehow manage to capture him in a jelly jar and I've taken a few pics. You guys would know better than me being that I moved down not too long ago. Scared the hell out of me.

From my brief research it might be a wolf spider?

So I let him go out back after some more researching. I'm fairly confident it was a wolf although none of the pictures I saw had that V shaping on the head. Wolfs also have 8 legs, but they may have gotten torn off in the scuffle I seriously threw the coffee table out of the way and then tossed the couch aside after he ran under.

So has anyone seen this species in their house...with the V looking thing on the head? The fangs are enormous too. I guess I can be glad it wasn't a recluse or widow.

It does look a bit like a brown recluse: Brown recluse spider - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia I'm no arachnologist though.

A little, but the recluse has a uniform color on its abdomen. That wiki also shows a "large recluse" being only a little bigger than a penny. The spider in my house was at least twice the size of a 50 cent piece.

I'm surprised people aren't jumping in saying they've seen this spider plenty of times...

Oh wow thats pretty big. I haven't moved down to Tampa just yet so I'm not really familiar with what might be down there, the climate is quite a bit different than here in Virginia.

I was gonna say a huntsman spider but it looks more like a wolf spider according to this site. spider identification chart

edit- here's a pic of a huntsman spider and it matches your spider's head markings.

Maybe a trap door spider?

Google Image Result for http://www.termite.com/images/trapdoorfemale150.gif

I haven't seen that particular spider myself.

Good find! They do share very similar markings. The only huge difference I can see is the amount of hairs on him.

Here is a picture of a huntsman and you can see a similar pattern on the head, and also the little black notches on the legs. You can barely see it in my picture but that is how he looked.

And reading further into it they're very fast spiders and the one in my house was definitely quick. I think my money has to go on huntsman.

Oh, I guess it is a Huntsman! I was thinking the legs didn't look right. We had one in our house a while ago, which really freaked my dh out. Picture a muscular manly man jumping up and down on his toes. Heehee. Anyway, it was REALLY big and the legs looked as though they had hinges on them.
