9th is perfectly fine north of about 375. South of Downtown, it gets sketchy, but gets better the closer you get to Pinellas Point. You heard right...the western fringes of Downtown are a little sketchy, partly due to some flophouse/shelter-type establishments along Central. Once you hit 34th Street, the area northwest of the Central/34th intersection seem to be okay.

I found it on Google Earth, thanks Ferret. Why Ferret? Just curious...
Do we know what schools are like around OLD NE, please?

We were up in St. Pete again this weekend, it was my birthday and I just wanted to get out a little. Anyway, we drove through some neighborhoods and I think Pinellas Point is quite nice. Houses and yards are large but not overly fancy, and the location is very convenient to things. Right by the interstate and near Skyway Bridge. I think there is a waterfront park there, too. The streets are pretty, tinted a pinky-red, and wind all around. I like neighborhoods like that.

So, I'm guessing I want to stay North of 375 and East of 275. Is that correct? I'm looking for a safe neighborhood but one with character. Where should I (roughly) draw my Northern border if I prefer neighborhoods with some history/character, as opposed to new construction/sprawl?

Probably 22nd or 30th Avenues North. This doesn't include the Allendale neighborhood, which has some older homes. It's centered around 9th Street at 38th Avenue North.

Most of the area west of 275 is safe, just not historic.

Thanks ferret! Very helpful to know.

Are there alligators in Crescent Lake? I've heard there can be alligators in any freshwater lake in Florida. Just curious. I'm not scared of them but I do have dogs.

Yes, there's always that risk. I doubt it, though. I can't imagine the water in there is all that clean. Plus, that's such an urban area, I don't know where one would come from. Still, I guess just play it safe.

Thanks, Jennie! We have no kids, I really don't know anything about the schools there. Having kids definitely shapes where you want to live. I would say see if you like that area first, then check the schools. Just driving around I thought it looked real nice. Here is some info on the neighborhood:

If you look on a map of St Pete/Pinellas county. I'd say anything north of Central, east of 9th st, and west of 49st,will produce some nice neighborhoods to live in.
If i had the money Snell island around Coffee Pot Bayou is where i'd park the old Mercedes..
