I have zero tolerance for DUI. It's simple. If you are drinking, don't drive. 1st non injury offense should be loss of license for life. No screwing around. 2nd non injury offense should be two year actual jail time. No screwing around. Any offense where someone was injured is automatic jail time. No screwing around. Any offense involving a death should be murder and sentenced accordingly.

Cops should sit outside bars and clubs and pull every stinking loser over for suspicion of DUI. Every one, every time. Bars and clubs can pay the tab for the police. They make enough money selling booze to people who will then drive drunk and kill an innocent person.

What you propose happened to an uncle of mine. He stiffed the cops on a donation or something. They knew where he went to drink and he was a regular there. Sure enough, one time he walked out, drove away and bingo. Gotcha!

Since this method of law enforcement works with drugs in "buy and bust" operations, I dont see why it could not be applied to "drunk and bust" operations. im not saying everybody who walks out of a bar
should be stopped and tested, but in a lot of cases I think it is quite obvious as to when someone smashed enough leaves an establishment as to their level of intoxication.

I agree that drinking and driving is stupid in the first place and criminal in the second place and should be dealt with accordingly.

Mr. Dentist there had the $$ to hire a lawyer to wiggle him out of a 20-30 year sentence.
Its unfortunate that happens, but money talks.

Someone surprised the dentist got only 12 years? After Casey Anthony walked away with nothing I am not surprised to anything anymore...

As for the DUI... whan I was in college here, I witnessed 99% of students driving drunk at some point of their college life. One of the reason - lack of public transportation.

The Hospitality Industry has better lobbyists than the drug dealers, that's why. It's been tried but ruled as entrapment every time. But I do agree with you.

There are rumors going around town that the dentist was not the driver of the vehicle. People claim his wife was the one actually driving at the time of the accident and he's just taking the blame to spare her from prison. I find this hard to believe because surely the police would have fully investigated this, but the rumors persist.

Land O'Lakes pedestrian, 71, killed in crash | Tampa Bay Times

Land O Lakes, another one. Mods can we get a sticky thread going of Pedestrian deaths in the bay area. I would say this is a pandemic but it has been happening for 20 years so who cares right as long as your SUV can make it to work in time.

Yet in another thread you posted that you're all for legalization of drugs such as cocaine, marijuana and others - Don't you think legalization of hard drugs will increase the number of DUIs?

No, because people are using drugs anyway. I think they should be legal, regulated and taxed but along with alcohol you should not be allowed to drive a vehicle above a 0.00000000000000 level. Do that crap at home and keep the roads safe and your license intact. The real enforced penalties for DUI are so lax that people are willing to risk it. Make the penalty strong enough to deter people from operating a vehicle while under the influence and that would help more than anything.

In a perfect world legal drug use might work...people that use drugs harder than marijuana tend not to be the most responsible folks so chances are they would think nothing of getting behind the wheel of a car high...yes you can make harsh penalties but addicts don't think about consequences...just getting high...

Yes, but there are a lot of drinkers who think nothing of getting behind the wheel and people who do hard drugs are already doing them.....so having it illegal really doesn't stop them.

The only reason I believe in legalizing drugs is that I do not think the government should be telling people what they can and cannot injest. Either way, I think people who get high or drunk are morons and it should be a severe criminal offense to operate a motor vehicle while under the influence.....with severe penalties to match.
