I've read a ton of posts and found lots of of great advice, but our needs are a bit different. We are empty nesters, relocating to Tampa area, hoping to eventually retire there. So, we need a combination of good commute now (Westshore business district) and a cool place to retire, where kids and grandkids will want to come visit.

So,schools not important, rather have minimal yard upkeep, security important (gated preferred) want upscale, but not huge, this seems to be hard to find. Either town house or single family and budget up to $3500/ month. Want commute no more than 30 minutes, preferably less. On the water with boat dock would be nice. A place with some charm, and things to walk to. Not a far flung 'burb, where you have to drive to everything. A pool, private or community.

Of course I will eventually work with a realtor, and come down for a visit, but I like to do my research. If I found the perfect place I'd come down in a hurry!

Areas I'm looking at, and issue I have with each:
South Tampa / who wants to visit grandpa here?
Bayport/ rocky point / as above, plus airport noise?
Feather sound/ not too much available
St. Pete, NE. Commute time, flood zones
Clearwater/ commute time, lack of character.
Other: curb appeal, tile roof nice too.
Whew! I guess I'm asking for too much!

Have you looked at downtown St Pete? That could be a good option for you.
