Looking for a nice spot to take the wife to dinner in the Tampa area. No seafood, she has an allergy. I want a place that isn't like Olive Garden. Cozy seating, dim lighting possibly with tabletop candles.

Also, someplace where we won't look out of place for being dressed up. I am getting a new car and plan to pick her up from work and take her shopping for a new dress then get her hair and nails done in the winter haven/lakeland area. I plan on slacks and a nice dress shirt/tie.

Prefer Italian but open to anything. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Cost isn't a major factor but would love to keep it under $500.

Bern's is quite nice, but not Italian.

Check out Armani's in Tampa. It's located on the top floor of the Hyatt hotel (on the east side of the Courtney Campbell causeway). It has delicious Italian food, beautiful views of the sunsets, the bay and the Tampa airport. You'll love it.

Ivarones is our favorite Italian restaurant in Tampa, it fits every requirement you listed.

We've been many times and have never been disappointed.

I second Iavarone's. Great food, outstanding service, nice romantic atmosphere.

All good choices previously. Here's two more: The Palm Restaurant at Westshore and the Aquaknox in the Westin Hotel. The Aquaknox is primarily seafood but they have other choices. My last trip there, I ate short ribs and they were awesome!

Home... hire a private chef, nix the new dress but do include an all-out spa gift certificate. Decorate yourself or ask a friend of hers to pick up flowers, candles, etc.

You select her favorite music, decorate, hire the chef (make sure clean up is included that night or the next day; better yet, a cleaning service for a few weeks).

Don't forget the spa certificate for two, she can bring you or a girlfriend, let her make the decision.

Right across from Old Town in Kissimmee there's a nice Italian place called Pacinos. Check them out.

Victoria and Albert's in the Grand Floridian at Disney. It is the most romantic and best dinner experience you will probably ever have. My wife and I go to a AAA 5 diamond restaurant each year for our anniversary. We've been to 5 different 5 diamonds now (there are probably only 40 or 50 in the country) and V & A is our favorite. It is not just a meal, it's an experience. Every course is absolutely delectable and I'm not exaggerating when I say that my wife and I discuss if this course or that course is the best thing we've ever eaten. And the service is extraordinary. Your wife will be blown away by taking her there. Expect to spend $300 + whatever you spend on alcohol and generally you're meal will last about 3 hours. You must call ahead for reservations and jackets are required for guys. I'm salivating just thinking about going back there.

This won't work to well as we have kids and don't have anyone to send them to for the night. Also, it has been quite some time since our last night out due to the kids and military deployments. It isn't really a break from her cooking as i do most of the cooking at home when i am there, but a chance for us to get out of the house and continue the "dating" environment of the marriage.
