San Francisco,Boston,Chicago to name a few cities you'd be hard pressed to get by on 50,000 grand a year!
I know a lot of people who work in Boston and San Francisco and get by on that or even a lot less.

You don't think the cost of owning a home should be factored into the cost of living?

Denver's millage rate runs about 65,
The highest in Hillsborough County FL is less than 30. FL average is about 25 mils.

Let's not even talk weather. In Denver the average winter temp is 14 degrees F. In Jul it is 88.
Denver also has long and mild spring and fall, where they don't need to heat or cool They heat in the winter like we cool in the summer--actually probably less as Denver (contrary to public opinion) is not in the mountains, but rather on the edge of them. The mountains actually shelter Denver from a lot of heavy snow and bad weather.

They also have income tax which makes up the difference in property taxes--in some cases it's probably a lot more than property taxes would be in Florida because their pay scales are overall considerably higher.

Makes me wonder why they came here in the first place and makes me wonder more as to why they stay. Why live in such misery? They have no idea what is going on in NYC. Seems they also don't have much idea what is going on in Denver CO either.
I'm not a Florida hater, but there are some things about this state that are totally screwed up--like forcing everyone to subsidize Citizens so those insured by it can pay below market rates.

Right getting by is different then living. I'm talking about a family and being able to own a home, car and pay bills with an income of $50,000. I'm not talking about renting and using mass transit!

You can get a coop in a decent but not luxury Park Slope building for $250-ish. (A friend just bought one there.)

I've got a friend who is a single mom and a teacher in Boston, She owns a condo and a car and makes ends meet. It's not easy, but she does it.

I guess the call it the "mile high city" because of them not being in the mountains.

Sheltered from heavy snow? 60" in 2009-2010 isn't a lot? That's 5 feet of snow!

Here is the facts. 34.2 to 61 in April isn't mild in my book. You don't need heat in April?

Jan15.2°F43.2°FFeb19.1°F47.2°FMar25.4°F53.7° FApr34.2°F60.9°FMay43.8°F70.5°FJun53.0°F82.1 °FJul58.7°F88.0°FAug57.4°F86.0°FSept47.3°F77. 4°FOct35.9°F66.0°FNov23.5°F51.5°FDec16.4°F44 .1°F
and they have state income tax too?

Oy.
