You should look at a map and not go by the logic that "There's no way it's that far."

Or, maybe you're walking/driving from Bayshore to the Northern boundary by TGH ?
As the map reads? Okay look at the map your looking at. Look at the places one might go. Not where the center of downtown according to Google is. I am using a map and knowledge to put a realistic idea of what these neighborhoods are:

1) Downtown is only .96 miles square so it is impossible for the restaurants and majority of residents and hotels to be more than 1.1 miles away.

2) Examples:
It's a 1.1 mile drive to the Harbor Island Athletic Club from Skypoint: https://maps.google.com/maps?saddr=N...s&mra=ltm&z=15

It's less than a mile from the The Place at Channelside to Cafe Dufrain: https://maps.google.com/maps?saddr=N...p=0&sz=16&z=16

It's 1.1 miles from one of the many Harbor Island high-rises to the Bank of America building: https://maps.google.com/maps?saddr=N...p=0&sz=16&z=16

For me to get to 1.6 miles, I have to go from Cafe Hey (outside of donwtown) to the Seldon Apartments: https://maps.google.com/maps?saddr=N...p=1&sz=16&z=16

3) 1.6 miles is smaller then 95% of "downtowns" so being 1.6 miles away from the city center does not

4) The density on the north end of Harbor island is not "suburban" in any way.

5) It is part of the downtown Special Services district and CRA -- which legally makes it downtown too.

As for Davis Island, I said it's not part of downtown because it's not connected to it at all.

Harbor Island cannot be 2 miles from Downtown. I live in Channelside (which is right next to HI and further to Downtown) and i walk to work. My walk is less than a mile. I walk to UT, and that is 1.5 Miles. I consider all that downtown. I walk to publix, (On bayshore) that is 0.9 miles. So yes that is all downtown. All you idiots who keep bashing downtown probably live in Brandon where you have to DRIVE 5 miles to the nearest store. I am sick of seeing people bash the ONLY nice parts of Tampa. And yes they are the nicest parts because they cost the most money. It is like idiots who bash NYC for being to over-crowded, yet every apt in NYC is $1 million or more. So i guess it must not be that bad Downtown Tampa is nice. And i include it from Channelside to actual Downtown. Just like Downtown Manhattan starts at the Staten Island ferry, goes west to the South Stree Seaport, and north to the WTC, East to the Battery park. Stop being such negative losers. People jog riverwalk and bayshore all the time. And all downtown's have homeless.

Again back to NY, there are million dollar apts all over and they have homeless.

and who cares if Tampa is dead downtown at night. AGAIN, go to donwtown manhattan after 6 pm. It is a ghost town (Even beofre WTC collapse). These are the same people bashing downtown because you cant raise a kid there, yet knock it for being quiet at 7 pm lmao! Yes, most of us are watching TV and eating dinner in our houses. Sorry there arent 2,000 people outside like u want. But then u would complain it is too noisy and u cant raise a kid there. There is no utopia in this world. You talkin bout places like Nashville lmao! So then move there. Or move to NY. BEcause if Tampa's downtown isn't hip enough for u, then go to NYC. Just know a 1 BR rents for $4,000 a month. A shyt one that is 100 years old and 350 square feet (probably a walk up with no elevator).......
